| Mills From The Wood Elfin's Workshop: |
All
of my mills are made from non-toxic woods such as Maple, Hawaiian Koa, Myrtle
and many others which do not have a strong natural aroma (cedar world probably
compete with the aroma of your pepper). Most of my mills are finished with
glossy tung oil applied in many thin coats then polished, buffed and waxed so
the finished product has a smooth and glossy feel. I leave the interior of
my mills natural so that the finish will not contaminate the contents, even
though the finish is non-toxic.
The mechanism that I use is called the CrushGrind, its grinding mechanism is made of ceramic which will not rust or dull and in addition to grinding salt and pepper it will grind dried spices or even coffee beans (not sure why you would want to but it will).
Here are some handy tips for your new salt or peppermill!!
To adjust how fine or course your spices are ground, loosen or tighten the knob on the bottom of the mill.
Avoid direct contact with steam when grinding as it can clog up your mill and make the peppercorns or salt crystals moister than usual.
Give the mill a quick shake after grinding to prevent excess grounds from falling out of the mill later.
Store stocks of salt and pepper in a dry, clean environment.
Giving your mill a coat of a good quality paste wax (I use Johnson's Paste Wax) every few months will clean it and keep it in good shape.
The following are some of my most popular styles and I can make you one from your choice of wood. I can also combine styles so if you like the lid of one mill and the body of another one I can combine the styles for you.

The prices quoted below are starting prices based on commonly available woods such as Maple, Redwood, Walnut, etc. prices will increase as the cost of the wood increases such as burl and exquisitely figured woods. Some of the more exotic woods may be quite a bit more. As an example, a piece of Amboyna burl large enough to make a 12 inch mill may cost as much as $100.00 or more which will make a substantial difference in the price.
